Letterboxes Ride 2009 -

The record of my progress in visiting the Letterboxes Ride landmarks.

A strange reason for a ride, but I was quite taken with them after reading a book about the history of letterboxes in this country so decided to see how many I could visit this year. Started off with this air mail box in Windsor (which happened to be on the Round Britain Rally this year as well!):

1. Windsor (Saturday 3rd October 2009)

On a day riding around the north west to collect my last Round Britain Rally landmarks visited this letterbox in Rochdale, a unique one, having a lamppost on the top of it. It is next to the Pioneers Museum which is an interesting place to go around. I also went through Liverpool and took the second picture of a 'Liverpool Special' letterbox in the middle of the redeveloped Albert Docks. According to the guide I was chatting to, it is the most photographed letterbox in the country:

2. Rochdale (Saturday 10th October 2009)

3. Albert Dock, Liverpool (Saturday 10th October 2009)

Went down to Evesham for the day to have some work done on the GS by Neil Harrison (aka 'Steptoe' - anyone who has visited the UKGS forum will know him as the acknowledged expert on all things to do with BMW GSs). On the way back visited Rous Lench in Worcestershire (for the second time this year as it was also a landmark on the Round Britain Rally), and then Warwick, to stop at the George V letterbox at the top of the High Street, so at least I got to visit five of the letterboxes this year. Shall try and visit the rest of them next year:

4. Rous Lench, Warwickshire (Saturday 5th December 2009)

5. Warwick (Saturday 5th December 2009)

On the Winter Challenge visited the oldest postbox in Britain, at Barnes Cross in Dorset:

6. Barnes Cross, Dorset (Saturday 6th February 2010)

Visited this letterbox in Tintagel on the second South West Peninsula Rally:

7. Tintagel, Cornwall (Saturday 29th March 2010)

Visited these two letterboxes on the first Grim Riders' Treasure Hunt:

8. Cambridge (Saturday 24th April 2010)

9. Framlingham, Suffolk (Saturday 24th April 2010)

There are two Victorian letterboxes in Framlingham - you have to visit both to be able to claim for this landmark.

Visited this letterbox in Llandudno on the way to Ireland for the Bally Rally in 2010:

10. Llandudno, North Wales (Friday 12th June 2010)

Visited two letterboxes on the second Grim Riders' Treasure Hunt, but had been to one (in Llandudno) the year before:

11. Bethlehem, Brecon Beacons (Saturday 23rd May 2011)
